WHICH COOK BOOKS TO BUY FOR SOUTH INDIAN, GUJARATI, KONKANI, RAJASTHANI AND OTHER CUISINES

Hi Bloggers,
I am going to India in March. Every year I get a lot of cook books. I have more than 50. I wanted some suggestions on good cook books. I wanted books with traditional recipes, those cooked in every day life. If you have any favorite cook book, do give me some suggestions. Would love some feedback.

Thanks a lot.

Going to India, hope you learn lot of recipes from mom and post for us!:)
Sanjeev Kappor has one Konkani book, don't know whether it's authentic. I like Nita Mehta's books too. Dakshin, Aharam are my south Indian books. I think you will have more choices in India than here what we get Amazon etc. Look thru' and decide.
I will put Baingan da bharta in my next post!:)

Hi Ashaji,

Will try to get Dakshin and Aharam. have SK books. Waiting for the bharta recipe. You will present it much better than me. Planning to make gujarati farsan next week for te event.

Hi Vimmi,
For Gujarati, I think Tarla Dalal's complete Gujarati cookbook is very good.
For south Indian, I have Chandra Padmanabhan's Dakshin which I like a lot.
I have read on Tarla Dalal's website about Rajasthani cookbook by her. but I don't have it so don't know much about the contents/

Hi Vimmi

I found that you need suggestions to buy ''cookery books.'' My suggestion's please do not buy cook books. Already you've more than 50. Now a days almost all the recipes're available in net [ even in blogspot ] and lots of cooking tips. If you're searching for a particular recipe, please visit my blog and you can find 3 Indian recipe link. Mamtas kitchen, Ruchis kitchen and Indo base.

Regards

Niya

tarla dalal's gujju and rajasthani cookbooks are excellent.

Vimmi, Nita Mehta's Punjabi Khaana is turning out to be a good buy, in my case. Every week, I've been making something or the other from that, and it's been a success. Healthy Oriya Cooking by Bijoylaxmi Hota and Kabita Pattanaik is good too.

i Vimmi,
You can check out the cookbooks by Tarla Dalal and also Sanjeev Kapoor ..I got great recipes from the them ....you have a good thing going on here ...keep it up ...

Hi Meera,
Thanks. Will get Tarla Dalas Gujarati book. I have er indian cooking and chaats book.

Hi Niya,

I do surf the net a lot but collecting cook books is a passion for me. I have to tone it down though. Blogs are a great source for regional cuisines.

Hi Bee,

Have noted down tarla Dalal's books.

Hi Sra,

Have noted down the names for oriya cook books. would love to get them. Have around 15 nita mehta books. I started my collection with her books.

Thanks Spice of Life,

I had registered online on Sanjeev Kapoor's website last yr. I have to re-register. Great recipes and only 12 dollars for the hole year.

Hi Vimmy,

Thanks for reply.

Then I can suggest 3 cookery books.

For South Indian cookery - Meenakshiyammal's cook& see

Microwave cooking- Mallika Badrinath

For Kerala cookery - A series of cookery books written by Mrs K.M. Mathew. Step by step instruction're very useful.

Cheers

Niya

Hi Vimmi,

For south indian i follow Meenakshi ammal's cook n see. I think it's available in all south indian languages and also hindi. it's a bit exhaustive book and not step-by-step but good one for brahmin style cooking. Last time I bought 'Gujarat nu Jaman' by Devaki Bubbar. I've tried many recipes and we liked them. My gujarati friend had a look at the book and said she thought the recipes were authentic.

vimmi get meenakshi ammals 'cook & see' series for authentic south indian recipes . i have some cauliflower in the fridge & i am planning to try out your cauliflower parathas this weekend :)

For Gujarati,I would suggest Tarla Dalal and for all the others I think Sanjeev Kapoor is the best.I have tried many of his recipes and they always are delicious!!!

i Home cooked,
YEs. I have a variety of books of Sanjeev kapoor. Like them a lot.

I dont know how I forgot to mention these 2 -

Cooking at home with pedatha - by jigyasa giri & pratibha jain for authentic vegetarian andhra cooking

Ruchira - by kamalabai ogle for Maharashtrian cooking. Ruchira is now translated in English, so it has selected Maharashtrian recipes. The original one was written in Marathi which came in 2 parts - with hundreds of recipes.

Meera said...

oops! "published" too soon! FYI, Ruchira is for authentic Maharashtrian vegetarian recipes.

vimmi said...

Hi meera,

Have listed them both down. I do have Raschandrika, but will try to get Ruchira.

Vimmi, I always buy lots of book when I go to India too. Some of my treasured books include:
Rotis and Naan of India (Purobi Babbar), Usha's Pickle Digest (Usha Prabhakaran), Rasachandrika (Konkani/Saraswat), Ruchira (Marathi) and some books printed in Marathi, but that might not be of interest to you. Look for local authors, you can find some real gems sometimes. I noticed that you already have Rasachandrika.
If you are going to be in Goa I can send you the names of bookstores that you might like.
